Your stretching story sounds legit. I went from a 00g to 1/2" using medical tape, seeing as the thickness of the tape will be difftent between the many diffrent types, a good thing to know is that reaching the flare of a plug means about two sizes on a normal gauge scale, about 2.3mm. Have fun restretching:)
