uneven stretch?

hey folks, new here. was wondering if you guys could give me some advice. i'd had my ear at 12mm for a few years, decided to get the other ear pierced because i want to stretch it up to match, then go up to 16mm on both of them. however, when i went in to get it pierced, the guy eyed my current stretch and said that i'd be pushing it going to 16, and that i was already pushing it at 12. he said that the skin at one part was thinning, like it hadn't stretched evenly all the way around, and that if i keep going the skin will die and just fall apart... then proceeded to tell me a horror story about some dude he knows that it happened to. i mean i trust this piercer, he's a cool guy, but it got me really worried. he recommended i downsize to 10mm and massage the lobe daily; i've done both, and yeah, the skin is a bit thinner in this one section, but it's not seriously thin or anything. have any of you had experience with this kind of thing before? is there any way other than massage to even it out? i've been using holey butt'r. was using it beforehand but i thought i'd continue it for this as well. is he being alarmist? i didn't stretch it fast; i first stretched about nine years ago. i'm also leaving the jewellery out overnight.
let me know, cheers.
