I have now been at 10mm for (at a rough guess) over two months.

Yesterday I decided to buy a double flared wooden plug, because I'd never worn double flares before and I fancied a change. But even with lots and lots of oil, it took me a good half hour of fiddling around to get the plug in, and I ended up taking it out after about an hour because I was scared of my ear shrinking up around the jewellery.

Is it supposed to be THAT difficult to get them in? It's not even like the plug has a huge flare on it, it's actually barely noticable. Should I consider maybe using one of my other plugs to tape my ear to slightly more than 10mm to make inserting the jewellery easier?

I've never tried double flared plugs, but what you've written is what I worry about... i.e. getting them in and then my lobes shrinking around them. I think once your lobes settle down to a size, it is a case of learning how to put them in and then taking them out enough so your lobes don't shrink! I think anyway from what I've read! There is a bit of a knack of putting them in sort of tilted. Plenty of vids on youtube with advice on how to put double flared plugs in.
